Topical retinoids are acne treatments that contain vitamin A or vitamin A-like compounds and are applied directly to the skin. Milder forms of retinoids include retinol and retinaldehyde, and are generally available over the counter, while stronger topical retinoids require a prescription. Topical retinoids can be found in gel, cream or liquid forms. Some of the most commonly used types of prescription topical retinoids are:

- Adapalene (Differin)
- Tazarotene (Tazorac)

Topical retinoids stop the spread of acne by clearing the skin's pores from the clogs that can cause acne. By clearing the pores, other topical acne treatments are then able to directly treat the acne. However, using topical retinoids offers more benefits than just acne control. Topical retinoids are also known for their ability to reduce the signs of aging by reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles and sun-damaged skin.
There are several side effects that one may experience following the use of topical retinoids. One of the most common is skin irritation. Some people who have used a topical retinoid such as tretinoin have reported experiencing an eruption of acne during the first few weeks of treatment. This should not be a major concern, though. It's actually a sign that the dormant acne has been accelerated to facilitate treatment.
Cost
The average cost of a prescription for adapalene is $50, while the average cost of tazarotene and tretinoin prescriptions are $75 and $40, respectively. Prices will vary depending on brand, dosage and insurance coverage.
Effectiveness
Topical retinoids are among the most effective topical acne treatments for mild to moderate acne. For many years, topical retinoids have been the preferred treatment for acne primarily in the form of whiteheads and blackheads, but it is also considered a very effective treatment for use with inflammatory acne and is recommended for use early in treatment.
