Photodynamic Therapy Acne Laser Treatment
Photodynamic therapy - or acne laser treatment - uses either specialized lasers or lights to facilitate a decrease in the production of oil secreted by the skin's oil glands. It also aids in acne removal by treating skin bacteria, which can lead to inflammation. One example of this treatment is blue light acne therapy, in which sessions of low-intensity blue light are used to target skin bacteria. These sessions usually last only 15 minutes, but require ongoing treatments. Another type of photodynamic therapy is Diode laser acne treatment. This treatment involves the use of lasers, to destroy the skin's oil producing sebaceous glands.
Pros and Cons
Blue light acne therapy has been shown to be one of the best light therapy treatments for treating acne, with many incidences in which it has healed inflammatory acne that has not responded well to other acne treatments. Blue light therapy is also a relatively quick and painless procedure, lasting only 15 minutes per session. However, blue light acne treatments also may cause pigment changes in skin, swelling of treated acne pimples or dryness of the skin.
Some studies have found laser therapy to be effective in treating inflammatory types of acne. Diode laser therapy is used to treat the skin's middle layer, while causing little to no damage to the skin's outer layer. Yet, those who opt for this acne laser therapy may experience a temporary redness or swelling of the treated skin areas.
Cost
Many insurance plans will not cover photodynamic treatments of acne. Therefore, this can be a pricy treatment option, which individuals may need to cover themselves. On average, a session of photodynamic therapy can cost anywhere from $800 to $1,600.
Effectiveness
Photodynamic therapy is a somewhat new form of acne treatment. Studies have yet to fully examine the long-term benefits and risks of using photodynamic acne therapy.
